It's never bad to be learning. I love it. You should learn something new every day. Anyway, that's one of the things I love about nursing. Everyday you learn something new. From someone, about something, how to think about something. It's also very inspiring. When I finally have time for my art again, I will have a lot of stuff to pull from. One of my graduation presents to myself is going to buy a bunch of film and go out and photograph. I just have put that on hold for too long. That, and all of the film I have to develop. :p

Read recently about positive defense mechanisms, ways in which we sort out our emotions and desires--

Level 4 - Mature

These are commonly found among emotionally healthy adults and are considered mature, even though many have their origins in an immature stage of development. They have been adapted through the years in order to optimize success in life and relationships. The use of these defences enhances pleasure and feelings of control. These defences help us integrate conflicting emotions and thoughts, while still remaining effective. Those who use these mechanisms are usually considered virtuous.

They include:

* Altruism: Constructive service to others that brings pleasure and personal satisfaction
* Anticipation: Realistic planning for future discomfort
* Humour: Overt expression of ideas and feelings (especially those that are unpleasant to focus on or too terrible to talk about) that gives pleasure to others. Humor, which explores the absurdity inherent in any event, enables someone to "call a spade a spade", while "wit" is a form of displacement (see above under Level 3). Wit refers to the serious or distressing in a humorous way, rather than disarming it; the thoughts remain distressing, but they are "skirted round" by witticism.

Yup, and so do the tobacco, fast food corporations etc..does that mean health insurance too? I'm sorry, but until you have had a major illness in your family and have seen first hand how important it is to have health insurance, don't talk to me from your pious ivory tower.

We are not necessarily talking about nationalized health care people. We are talking about health care as a right not a privilege or tied to something as unpredictable as a labor market. It shouldn't be a product that can be bought and sold like a can of coke. We are talking about a public option. Option being the key here.

So one of my other goals is to be more assertive. Which is strange, because up until a month ago I thought I was and then it dawned on me that I haven't been doing a very good job of it lately. Which has led me to do some soul searching as to why that is. Self reflection is always good, I think you should do some good old fashioned soul searching once a month.

I have realized that it's sort of easy to lose your perspective on yourself sometimes. It has amazed me lately, how many people need to become more self aware. I think it comes down to working on your interpersonal skills or just assesing how you are actually coming across to people vs. how you think you are. A lot of people miss the boat here, and the point being that a lot of people are not actually having conversations , being honest and straightforward, giving and taking, engaging the other person etc..as they are just overcompensating, people-pleasing, covering up deep rooted insecurities or engaging in weird twisted power plays. One of these, some combination, or I am sure another off a long list that I haven't named yet.

so anyway, having a "conversation" with people like this can be one of the lonliest feelings of all--because they aren't really there with you. I'm sure I have been guilty of this in the past, but then, I have always felt that I am pretty present with people no matter how I feel. Or at least genuine.

2. Creative people are problem-friendly.

Creative people thrive on challenges. They have a gleam in their eyes as soon as they sniff one. Challenges bring the best out of them – reason enough to welcome them.
5. Creative people are full of enthusiasm.
Creative people are enthusiastic about their goals. This enthusiasm works as fuel for their journey, propelling them to their goals.
6. Creative people are persistent.
Creative people know it well that people may initially respond to their new ideas like the immune system responds to a virus. They’ll try to reject the idea in a number of ways.

Creative people realize that the first idea is just the starting point. It is in the process of fleshing it out that some magical cross-connections happen and the original ‘normal’ idea turns into a killer idea.

Reframing can breathe new life into dead situations. It can motivate demoralized teams. It helps you to spot opportunities that you would have otherwise missed.
15. Creative people are friends with the unexpected.
Creative people have the knack of expecting the unexpected and finding connections between unrelated things. It is this special quality of mind that evokes serendipitous events in their lives.
Having honed the art of making happy discoveries, they are able to evoke serendipity more often than others.

Creative people realize that the energy that creates great ideas also creates errors. They know that failure is not really the opposite of success.

It makes me think, that some of the most intriguing work for me (or what I am drawn to a lot) is the ability to present something that is not normally thought of as "beautiful" or "appealing" and make you look harder and realize that it is. To make you question your idea of aesthetics, to make you look deeper in the details. Regardless of the subject, the best work for me always ultimately makes you question something. It's a little more mysterious.

Artists are invited to bring three images of their work, to share with other artists in the Performance Studio. These presentations will allow artists to introduce their work, discuss their ideas, and elevate the potential for collaborative projects with other artists.

Small Discussions

Discussions can range from public art projects, to student involvement, to organizing special art events within the community. Also, I am going back to school for nursing. I want to start in January. I am super excited.

found this little bit of advice.

--I am not a nurse, but a healthcare executive. I will speak to you about your job prospects.

Nurses are in extraordinarily high demand right now, and will continue to be for at least the next 10-15 years. We are now in a nursing "shortage" which is projected to become a nursing "crisis" in the next few years.

In certain markets, an RN can earn as much as a Physician's Assistant. If you get your RN, then the next logical step if you wanted to continue would be to become a Nurse Practitioner, which is (essentially) the same as the PA.

Your choice of what environment you want will greatly dictate what "level" of nursing certification you want.

For doctor's offices (my area of expertise) RN's are often, if not usually, overkill. RN's tend to be more suited for surgery centers, outpatient centers, and hospitals.

Doctor's offices lean more towards LPN's and really the last few years has been the rise of the MA (Medical Assistant). Practically every community college in the country now offers an MA program, and thank god, because we need them.

Surgical nurses are always in great demand. Neonatal nurses are always in demand, but you have to be the right kind of person, because your heart will be broken at least once a week, if not more often. You have the choice of any speciality you like, and you can always change.

You also have some interesting options if you are the adventurous sort.

Travel nurses are becoming more widely used, out of just sheer necessity. It is exactly what it sounds like. You go somewhere, nurse, then go somewhere else, and nurse.

In some hyper-demand markets (Like Las Vegas used to be, although I've not looked at it in a couple of years) they will fly you from anywhere in the country to Las Vegas, put you up, pay all your expenses, have you work 3 long shifts, and then put you back on a plane to anywhere. And you'll make a king's ransom.

But, understand the work is hard. It is heartbreaking, as well as backbreaking. Some patients will thank you profusely, others will call you a bitch. Some will write you cards when they get out of the hospitals, others will throw up on you and then ask why their supper isn't there yet.

You will have people die that you are performing CPR on. You will have people make miraculous recoveries after the doctor has given up hope. You will have someone having a routine procedure that was very nervous and you told them "you'll be fine" and they die on the operating table unexpectedly.

It's a hard job. But it is a VITAL job.

If you think you have the drive and wherewithal to do it, then you will be rewarded with much better than average pay for a bachelor's degree, and you'll never worry about your job security for the foreseeable future. You can also, quite literally, work ANYWHERE in the country. From the smallest hamlet to the largest city--

Just finished this book. I love Joan Didion's writing. She has a way of articulating her own thoughts in a way that I could only dream of. Anyway, it's a great portrait of grief, or loss. Not just in the obvious sense either. She is so great at nailing it psychologically. This book is not just about loss, but change and time in general, relationships and love.

I found this image, i forgot about. i took it outside of my apartment in chicago--i remember walking home and then seeing this little butterfly and having to get my camera and go back. i can't decide if i like it better in black and white or color.

this is an excerpt from an article i found:

One form of humor is called joie de vivre "joy of life." Joie de vivre-why speak of such a thing? Because it is one of the most complete forms of humor. Because it involves a kind of love, and we love life and others less than we can. (We function at only a small fraction of our capacity to love.) Because we have to learn how to laugh again. Because there are ideas and experiences which give us such insight that they change our lives. Because after understanding joie de vivre we will never abandon it, never go back to the way we once were. Because people already have great expertise at creating negative emotions, but know little about positive ones. Because we do not know what joie de vivre is. One of the most significant ideas in human experience is missing. And it is a neglected aspect of humor, as well.

What is joie de vivre? It can be a joy of conversation, joy of eating, joy of anything one might do. One may speak of a joie de finesse (refinement, grace, elegance), joie de réussite (success), the joy of summer, the joy of an embrace, the joy of giving etc. Alain: Il y a de merveilleuses joies dans l'amitié-joy of friendship.

And joie de vivre may be seen as a joy of everything, a comprehensive joy, a philosophy of life, joie is "sentiment exaltant ressenti par toute la conscience," that is, involves one's whole being.

and let me say this--the french are on to something.
